I want to put up a new bathroom in my basement. How much does it usually cost for a basic bathroom setup?

This is very much going to depend on your local labor costs as well as the materials you select. Also whether or not the plumbing rough in is already there.
In Baltimore County, Md., I'm paying about $6500 to $7000 to put a full bathroom in a basement where no rough in existed before.

About three-fifty. Why?

@Jon Kessler what level of finish are you installing? Ie tile tub surround, $/sf floor, high end vanity with stone top or builder grade with cultured marble? Do you typically have to put a sewage ejector pump in as well?

Hi Ravi,
Depends.
1. do you have sewer or septic? The reason I ask is that will usually determine where the line is. If you are running septic, you will most likely need an up flush toilet with a grinder pump and it will cost ya more.
2. are you already roughed in for a bathroom in the basement. What I mean is, did the builder already cut the floor and put a cap over where the toilet will go and is there a smaller drain sticking up for the sink? If not, it is ok. You will just need to cut the floor and put it in.
In short, 5k for a 1/2 bath is low end with walls and fixtures and not doing a ton of plumbing.
10k if you are putting a full bath and need a grinder/up flush toilet.
seems like a lot, but usually very much worth it for marketability for buyers or tenants.
Good luck!!!

Tub vs shower pan doesn't change the overall cost much for me. I'd opt for a tub if I have the room. Tile surround, ceramic tile floor. Nicer looking builder grade materials. No ejector pump. These houses are on public sewer. I honestly don't pay much attention to the cost per square foot of the floor since it's generally such a small area. It's the labor that makes up most of the cost for me on putting these in.

A rough estimate is $10,000. There are many factors involved here that we can't answer for you.

Thanks, @Jon Kessler ! Do you have a plumber, tile and carpenter you recommend? I’m working in Baltimore City but assume the trades that do work in the county would also come into the city.

I would say min 5K. You need to dig, then plumber, then concrete, then carpentry, exhaust fan, the materials electric....If you dont know anybody can go up to 10K.

My contractor who I have a relationship with could probably do it for about $3k if it is a half bath to full bath conversion. If it is a new full bath...probably about $4k - $5k.

If there are no lines/rough ins about 5-10k. You need the more expensive toilet with grinder and pump if your sewer line is above where you will install the toilet. This is usual with septic but can happen with older homes too. Also is it a full bathroom with shower or just a toilet and sink? How far is it from the waste line?
