What is your opinion on operating off-grid short term rentals? I'm looking for feedback from short term rental owners as my company, Into The Box, searches for direct sale customers of our off-grid units repurposed from shipping containers.

This gets into a niche market and I want to appeal to the masses.

I am with @John Underwood. I want to maximize my occupancy and that means internet, power and working septic.

I am sure there is a market for places for virtue signalers and greeners to stay, but it has to be a small market IMHO.

I have an off-grid cabin complete with solar, septic and propane. But who is going to clean it, do repairs, watch out for partiers? Not me, it's 5 hrs away.

There are these things called campers.  You can drive them.  They have a bathroom, kitchen, air conditiong, satellite TV, running water and beds.  It's more comfortable than living in a shipping container.

@Chris Wartko Im genuinely curious about this, where in Saint Pete could you do something off grid? Pinellas is the most densely populated county in FL.  I think its a cool idea and personally know people who rent cabins for huntin off grid, but they are out in TN and NC

After a lot of research, we'll be adding one of these to our portfolio in the spring on 20 acres that we have. We're putting one of the "dome" homes with glass ceiling on it with the self composting toilet, we may end up putting electric and well to allow for outdoor shower, etc. In our area, these are renting for around 200/night and most are booked in peak season from April - October at these rates or higher. Low cost of entry, if you can build out a deck/setup, very low cost to get started. It's a big trend right now and honestly , month 2 should cover your costs to get it setup (outside land costs).

We are considering doing this too.  We've passed so far on the opportunities we've seen because they were too difficult to get to.  For example, some of the homes you had to hike 15 minutes in, some you needed a 4x4 vehicle, etc.

If we can find one that makes it easy for the guest to get to, but gives them the off-grid experience, we are considering it.  The one thing we will do before we list it though it renovate it to be very high-end, so it can be marketed as an off-grid glamping experience.

 Do you guys have actual examples in place that can be looked at or pics or videos of customer units? I checked out the website but all I could find was the digital walkthrough and a couple of floor plans.

@Joe Kvidera  which brand did you decide to go with for the dome home?

Hiking in would be a turn-off for many. But using a 4x4 would only add to the experience as long as the road was not too bad. Seems like those are pretty common now, and anyone looking for this kind of experience would have one.

 This is what we went with;

There are a lot of options out there, we won't know until spring how it turns out, but for the low cost of entry, we figure we'll give it a try.
