Requesting help: Adding units to existing building

Hello all fellow RE enthusiasts,

Asking for some advice. Wondering if any of you have experience, specifically in AL (reason why I am posting this here), adding units/apartments successfully to existing structures or buildings. Wondering about the entire process, from gathering permits (if necessary, and would love clarity on this), to executing on the project.
