Newbie Looking to Connect
Hello, BP fam!
I'm a newbie to BiggerPockets and to real estate investing overall. I'm interested in connecting with other real estate investors out there, for advice or just general support.
I work for an advertising/PR agency in NYC as an Associate Creative Director. Simply put, I get to come up with cool ideas for brands. I don't know if I'll want to quit my job entirely, as it can be a lot of fun. But I've always had a passion for writing, and when I achieve full financial freedom (because it WILL happen), I plan on focusing more on writing screenplays for film and TV.
I live in Upstate New York where I just bought my first home. And I now have my sights set on buying my first rental property. I want to avoid analysis paralysis and feel that I can do so by settling on one market and learning what it will cost to dive right in. But where do I start? I was thinking about NC, if for no other reason than I know the state, have heart for it, and, based on very high-level research, think there could be decent investing opportunities there.
I look forward to connecting with any and all of you, to learn more about you and your investment journey as I'm not only excited about making money in this new endeavor but forming bonds as well.
And if any of you are looking for a mentee, please do let me know. :)
Thank you!
Anna
Welcome to the community. Please browse around and ask anyone anything. Upstate NY is gorgeous around I-90, but Saratoga Springs is great town too. The Finger Lakes are truly a beauty.
I think you are starting on a path that will be very rewarding.
If you need some direction about the Sunbelt for investing, I am happy to point you in the right direction. Good Luck and Welcome!

Hi @Anna M. Xiques, and welcome! I'm an agent in the Finger Lakes area- I live in Ithaca and cover here, Watkins Glen, Cortland, Binghamton and Syracuse. I know people are flocking south to buy properties, but don't forget to look close to home too! In fact, for your first purchase I would recommend buying somewhere near you.
Analysis paralysis is a thing! At first you just gotta dive in to looking at some places and running numbers. A good advisor- like an agent!- will be able to help you streamline the process and hone in on options that actually fit your goals.
Feel free to reach out if I can be of any help, but in the meantime keep us posted!
Welcome to BiggerPockets Anna and good luck investing!
Hey @Anna M. Xiques, welcome to BiggerPockets and congratulations on reaching out and doing the work!
While we personally do not invest in upstate NY, we have a few friends who do and they are pretty happy!
If you are looking to go out of state, there are plenty of places to go and look. We invest out of state ourselves and am happy to share all the tools, tips, tricks, mistakes, and successes. We also set aside a few hours each week to help others and give back. Nothing to sell, just helping to give back like we wish we had when we got started.
In any case, if you want an intro to upstate NY investors or want to chat about out of state investing, do not hesitate to reach out, connect and DM me.
Welcome @Anna M. Xiques! I live in NYC & invest in Albany. I think you're at the mid-way point.
Happy to chat if I can be of any help.
Good luck investing!
