Looking to become a real estate investor
Hi everyone, my name is Dakota Tossava and I have recently been spending my time reading books on sales/real estate investing. If anyone would be so kind as to point me to the resources that helped them accelerate their timeline/gain knowledge + increase skills, please do. Any and all resources would be helpful. Also, I would love to network and have a bigger circle of like-minded individuals (mentors, potential partners, accountability partners, etc.). I’m Not looking to get rich quick and I am willing to do the work necessary. As a lot of great investors say, “to get where you want to go, learn from someone who has already gotten there.” Thank you all in advance for your responses and help.
Cheers,
Dakota

@Cody Tossava I would look to attend local meetups. That is where I personally have gained the most value in my career. Here is a list.
Chicago Real Estate Investor Meetups (straightupchicagoinvestor.com)
I also would listen to the straight up Chicago Investors podcast. They have a lot of great content on there, and I am a huge fan. Lastly, I would figure out which niche of real estate you want to be in.
Hi @Cody Tossava,
Based on your situation and how much capital you have, try to decide how you want to invest in real estate and which market you plan to invest in. You can do research and listen to podcasts for hours but the best way to learn is by networking and experience. My recommendation would be to talk to an investor-friendly real estate agent in the market you plan to invest in because they can be a great resource. Begin analyzing deals and get a feel for that market!
Hi Cody, welcome to BiggerPockets! This is a great place to learn and further investigate investing in real estate.

Here are some resources I recommend.
Podcasts
- The BiggerPockets Podcast
- The Straight Up Chicago Investor - this podcast specifically focuses on investing in real estate in and around Chicagoland. Very good and relevant information.
- On the Market (Dave Meyer)
- The Real Estate Guys Radio Show
Books
Here's a list of some books I think you'll find the most useful when getting started with real estate investing:
- The Book on Rental Property Investing by Brandon Turner
- The Book on Managing Rental Properties by Brandon Turner
- The Book on Investing in Real Estate with Low (and No) Money Down by Brandon Turner
- Set For Life by Scott Trench
- The House Hacking Strategy by Craig Curelop
- The Millionaire Real Estate Investor by Jay Papasan and Gary Keller
- Cash Flow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki
- Retire Young Retire Rich by Robert Kiyosaki
Thank you so much, everyone. @John Warren and @Paul De Luca as I gain more experience is there any way either of you would be willing to take me under your wing? I am more than willing to pay you for your time and expertise. I don’t think I am at that stage yet but I figured I’d put out the feeler. If that’s not something you’d be interested in, could you possibly point me to someone who specializes in that who isn’t a “guru”?

@Cody Tossava I would not recommend that you try to find a guru. This is a simple business that has been around forever. The Bigger Pockets crowd is mostly a DIY type crowd that won't push gurus. I feel the resources that are out there are enough to get started with.
Quote from @John Warren:100% not looking for a guru. Just feel like this is easier to do with a network/mentor. I will start on the resources for now and go to local events to try and meet people. Thanks for all your help!

Welcome to BP Dakota. I would start with some podcasts and affordable self-directed online education. I have a couple very good resources that I can share. Just DM'ed you.

Hi Cody, welcome to BiggerPockets! This is surely the best place to start networking and learning. I always recommend the book “Rich dad, Poor dad” by Robert T. Kiyosaki to anyone starting out. Start listening to the BiggerPockets podcast starting at the very beginning and start growing your network, look on Facebook/BiggerPockets for different events, find a mentor doing what you want to do, and get to know the local lenders/brokers. All the best to your real estate journey!

For us it was attending local Real Estate Networking Events, Paying the Robert Kiyosaki Cash Flow game at least once per month & getting a real estate license.
