Chicago, Illinois investor looking to network/build a portfolio

Hi BiggerPockets,

I'm an attorney who is somewhat new to the nuts and bolts of real estate investing (it's been 2 years since I got dropped in the deep end), but I've been exposed to it my whole life. My father and I spent many summer days rehabbing and doing repairs on the few rental units that my parents owned. I currently own a handful of doors in rural northern California (where I grew up), but I am looking to expand my portfolio a little bit closer to where I have settled down, here in Chicago.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot from the forums, the podcasts, and the webinars, along with building my network!

Hi Adam! Welcome to the BP community! Congrats on taking action and working towards your financial independence! Recently I've headed a group of  Chicago BP   investors that go out every Saturday to view properties and make offers using no money down lines of credit. I have documented our experiences in the investor deal Diaries forum under the name project BP. We have a lot of fun learning about properties and taking action! Please check out the links below and leave a contact number interested.

Welcome Adam.  Sounds like you have a lot of experience and knowledge to share.  You have found the right place.  There are some Chicago meet up groups a few members here started.  I can't tag them for some reason.  @George Foster.  Anyways, that might be something you'll want to check out. Take care.

@Adam York - Welcome to BP!  We have a great group of local investors.  What are you looking to do?  What areas are you looking at?

Hi all, thanks for the kind welcomes! @Account Closed , I'd like to start small, with a SFH (or 2- or 3- flat if the price is right), and build from there. I'm a little bit nervous about SFH investing, as all of my experience to date is with 2- 3- and 4-plexes. However, I also understand that, particularly in Chicago, multi-units might be out of my price range. As far as location, I'll consider anything that's a reasonable drive from Chicago, but the closer the better.

Welcome to BP @Adam York

Lots of great meetups and active Chicagoans on the boards. Are you looking at buy and hold or flipping? Buy and hold with SFR in Chicago will be tough, but there are some great options to do a multi-unit, especially if you're open to doing an owner-occupied building.
