Contractors and Contacts

For those that are renovating houses either to sell or hold on to, how many contractors do you have in your database for the same job? Such as, how many electricians do you contact to get a bid for a job or do you have a general contractor that picks the specific companies to work with for you? I'm working on building my database of plumbers, electricians, roofers, etc, but am looking for a ball park number. Do you rely on 1 contact more than others and if so, what sets that person a part from the rest?
