Process of Permits in Jersey City

Dear Members,

I have recently purchased an apartment in Jersey City Downtown and am about to start a rather big renovation. The reno will include the below:

- New floors & Moldings

- 2 full bathrooms (increase the size of one shower and decrease the size of the closet that is on the other side of it)

- new staircase

- new A/C (currently there are only window units, I'm looking to have a split system)

- Install washer/dryer

Now, my question relates to permits. I know that I need permits for certain types of the work (do you know which one specifically?). However, as a foreigner I am not quite sure how the whole process works:

- I do not have a letter of occupancy as it is a Coop (I own shares of the building). Where will it be noted that I've done these renovations with a permit or without one?

- Will I receive a letter or so stating that I used an official permit & licensed contractor for the work or what will be the evidence?

Thanks all for your information. I am looking for experience directly from New Jersey or even better from Jersey City.

Sandro
