Preparation vs Taking Action

So i've been reading a couple of books on real estate investing and get an overall sense of " get off your butt and start doing"  The current book i'm reading is by Brandon Turner " the book on rental property investing" Great book and I feel like it's giving me a good path forward towards starting investment in real estate. However, i don't think i'm quite ready yet to make the leap and pull the trigger on a first deal. After all, this is only the third book under my belt. How much is too much preparation? How much is too little? I feel like after reading a couple of books the overarching mentality, techniques and methods on real estate investing would become repetitive but i also want to do my due diligence and get smart before rushing and failing at my first real estate investment.
