property management screening

Can anyone give me info on if its standard for property management company to ask for an interview of prospective tenant. They have already seen bank statements and canceled checks for over 16 months to show that current rent was paid on time , Verified with landlord no problems with current tenancy.  He shows 30 K steady balance in checking account, 700 credit score , verified employer with the state of california for over 12 years and income is over 10 k a month. This is for a rental that is 2,400 a month , (he is trying to save up to buy a house in a year so looking for something affordable.) What are the red flags here ? I am not understanding why any property management would take over two weeks for all of this and decide they now want to "interview' him ? He is a single man with 2 kids that visit on the weekends .. Are they discriminating ?
