Oven in attic apartment

Hello all!

My wife and I recently bought a top and bottom duplex, where the old attic had previously been into the second unit. One thing I noticed about the upstairs unit is that the only place the oven can go in the kitchen (because of the gas lines) is really pretty close to the sloping roof. Currently the ceiling there is some sort of paneling. I honestly can't tell if it is metal or just super high gloss paint.

I am planning to add a range hood in the coming weeks and was wondering: should I just replace the ceiling material while I'm at it? And if so, what would be safest for being that close to a gas range?

Below is a photo of the space. And my tenants were in the middle of making dinner when that photo was taken, so don't give them too hard of a time on the mess. ;-)

Thanks!
