Yellow Letter Campaigns

I am slowing learning all I can about Real Estate and have heard of 'yellow letter' campaigns. My parents own their house free and clear and actually received one of these letters in the mail. I am wondering what is the theory behind them? They thought it was some kind of a scam as did my siblings. I also thought it didn't seem very professional and I doubt would get me to make a call. Why do people think this is a way to attract sellers?
