ONTARIO: NEW EVICTION RULES (..SIGH)
Just looking to get a conversation going on the amendments to S.48 of the Ontario Residential Tenancies Act.
Landlords are now required to pay one month worth of rent when evicting for the purpose of taking over the unit for themselves.
^ Not a huge deal, but the bit about committing to one year or be fined $2,500.00 is ridiculous. I mean, could they not have made it 6 months?
Also, question: If a notice was served to a tenant mid July 2017 (Eviction for landlords own use) PRIOR to the amendment taking effect on Sept 1, 2017 , yet the eviction date is after (Oct 1, 2017), does it make a different (grandfathered) or is the landlord screwed under the new law?
Thoughts?
Tks!
