Duplex - 1 mailbox/1 address

I just closed on a house that used to be a single family, but was converted to a duplex. There is only 1 mailbox and 1 address.

We attempted to have a second address assigned to the property but ran into some issues so We would like to add a second mailbox and add unit A and unit B.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is it a simple as just purchasing the mailbox? Do we need to notify USPS?

@Chantelle Lewis

When you say you went to have a second address assigned who did you go to?

Is it a legal duplex?

Yes go to the usps and your county as well

The county typically addresses a duplex differently for life safety / emergency services needs.

USPS will want something proving that it is a legal second unit.

That's what we had to do with our ADU.

The mail-people will not deliver to separate mail boxes.

Alternatively, you can try adding a second mailbox right next to the existing one with labels and see if the mail-person would deliver. However, if it isn't permitted, now you are telling the world and that could be an issue with building and safety.
