Semifinals Set in First Competition of the American Triple Crown


Only four teams will advance to the upcoming 26-goal C.V. Whitney Cup semifinals this week. Orchard Hill, Crab Orchard, Valiente and Alegria will compete for the semifinals at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Orchard Hill composed of Steve Van Andel, Santiago Chavanne, Pablo MacDonough and Matias MacDonough won with 12-7 score against Lechuza Caracas (Victor Vargas, Nico Pieres, Juan Martin Nero and Nico Espain) during the opening day.

Pablo MacDonough led all scoring with six goals, Matias MacDonough adding five and Chavanne scoring one for the 12 score win. While Pieres scored five, and Nero added two for the 7 score loss.

In the second match, Crab Orchard (Facundo Pieres, Magoo Laprida, Matias Magrini and George Rawlings) defeated Flight Options (Eduardo Astrada, Miguel Astrada and Alejandro Astrada) with 14-10 win.

Pieres scored 12 and Laprida adding two for the win. While Miguel Astrada led the Flight Options with eight goals and each goal from Eduardo Astrada and Alejandro Astrada added to the loss.

Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo Caset and Adolfo Cambiaso) had a difficult win against Audi (Marc Ganzi, Gonzalito Pieres, Rodrigo Andrade and Gonzalo Del Tour) with 11-9 in the third match.

Caset, Cambiaso and Torres scored eight, two and one respectively for the win. On the other hand, Audi's losing effort was credited to Pieres and Del Tour scoring seven and two respectively.

The 2013 defending champion Alegria (Julian Mannix, Clemente Zavaleta, Polito Pieres and Hilario Ulloa) defeated Coca-Cola (Gillian Johnston, Sebastian Merlos, Julio Arellano and Facundo Obregon) in the last match of the day for 11-8 scores.

Mannix and Pieres each scored four goals, Ulloa added three for Alegria's win. For Coca-Cola's eight scores, these were credited to Merlos with four, and Arellano and Obregon with two goals each.

The semifinals of the CV Whitney Cup and the Subsidiary Les Armour Cup Wellington Polo was held last February 26 and 27 respectively with Orchard Hill competing against Crab Orchard and Valiente versus Alegria while Lechuza Caracas against Flight Options and Audi versus Coca-Cola.
