I'll have my tiller ready to go in a couple weeks. We live on a couple acres with plenty of room to do a bit of farming.

I've got several Deere's already, I'd need a little stockpile of fuel and a nice selection of seeds and I'm in business.

If the economy really goes to pieces and things start really going down hill, I'm pretty sure I could trade potatoes or corn for Gold or Silver all day long (not that I would though).

Food, Water and Ammo would be King, no contest.

I don't think we'll get to that point, hope not anyway. For now, Cash is still King and I'm OK in that category.

I'll be waiting to cherry pick a few stocks again if/when there is another huge drop in the market.

To answer the question, how am I protecting my money - at the moment by stockpiling it. When one of those perfect opportunities comes along I'll be poised to strike.

Cash, limited amount in Equities and for fun, I've gotten into older John Deere Garden Tractors.

Not only is it fun to find them and fix them up, but you can make some decent cash on them if you buy them right.

As a bonus, I can always go into the mowing business.

Actually, I'm working with one of my sons now to get him some mowing jobs, not small neighborhood lawns, but larger 1+ acre home-sites that the mow and go guys tend to overlook.

Who knows, we may be able to build up a pretty good business - I've got plenty of equipment to get him started.

I rank them about the same as Time Shares.

From what I've read, their sales tactics are about the same.

No reputable business would operate in the manner they do (you have to by the membership, for thousands of dollars, NOW, or be forever blacklisted).

I see my REI as investment seeds.

I've planted a couple seeds and they are beginning to grow.

Over time, as more seeds are planted, if I tend the garden well I expect increasing harvests every year.

When the harvests are bountiful enough to meet my expenses, plus a fair amount of excess, then that would be a good time to leave the 9 to 5 if I choose to.

Not in any hurry, my job is very secure, pays well, and I can do it as long as need be.

Slow and steady for me.

I'm still clawing towards getting 1% on the two rentals I have.

These were both pre-BP, I'm wiser now - LOL.

Real Estate is illiquid, especially when one needs out due to financial distress. Free and Clear property would not be quite as illiquid since at some price, any property becomes a no-brainer.

If you hold free and clear property you could always cash out relatively quick at some price - won't be the price you want, but you could cash out in a hurry if you had to.

Free and clear properties would appear to be the most risk free path to wealth building and steady income from Real Estate - providing you have adequate liquid reserves to carry you through any rough times.

With free and clear properties you can adjust rents down in a tough market and still cash flow, while those that are highly leveraged cannot.

Risk is a factor that needs to be accounted for, and leverage, anyway you cut it, equals higher risk.

In Real Estate, slow and steady really can win the race.

That part seems to give the owner, lessee, renter, or family member a fair amount of leeway.

So someone breaks into your house, you walk in on them, and you are required to flee - that's a problem right there.

If someone breaks into a house they certainly are up to no good. Do they have a weapon? I guess according to the law YOU should flee YOUR property, then IF the criminal takes a shot at you, and misses, then, and only then do you have the right to defend yourself.

That's just wrong.
