Not legal advice but rental in the LLC is a defensive move used to protect your assets and net worth outside of the LLC. Like Katherine said, having great insurance (high limits and replacement cost insurance) and umbrella policies can be as beneficial if not more than an LLC at protecting your assets and net worth. A great insurance broker will help you get the coverage you need to sleep soundly at night.

I've had GC issues when I've used people outside of their network. For example, the GC needed an extra week to start the project, so I hired a demo crew to gut the place so it would be one less thing needed to be done, but the GC didn't like that. I can understand why this would cause a rift with the GC.

I don't know a lot about plumbing but if it is a plumber you've used before that does good work then I'm guessing they'd be open to any questions you have regarding the costs of the pipe replacement.
