I am a big fan of Jack Canfield. As you probably remember, Jack wrote one of my favorite business books of all time called The Success Principles; How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be”. He also created the “Chicken Soup For the Soul” books.

Jack is a brilliant businessman and his Success Principles book he writes about the “Hour of Power” that you should integrate into your life.

So What Is the “Hour of Power”?

The hour of power is broken down into 3 segments:

  • 20 minutes of exercise
  • 20 minutes of reading educational or inspirational books
  • 20 minutes of visualization of your goals and meditation to quiet your racing mind that all entrepreneurs have

The hour of power should become a daily ritual done the first thing in the morning, so that it becomes a habit.

So What Does This Have to Do With Real Estate Investing?

Everything!

Successful entrepreneurs have all found ways hone their focus, break the habit of procrastination, and become a master of good habits in their lives. All of these things will largely determine whether you are ultimately successful or not. Adding the “hour of power” into your daily morning routine is just one more way to ensure your success. So let’s take a quick look at these three things.

Exercise for Good Health and Vitality

This is so self-explanatory that we really shouldn’t have to talk about it. But the truth of the matter is that most of us get up and delve right into the thing that we love so much; our businesses. This business of real estate investing takes energy and stamina, and it can also be very stressful at times.

If we don’t keep our bodies healthy with good food and exercise then our businesses and our personal lives will suffer. I think it’s great to plan go to the gym in the evening after work. But if most folks were to be honest, it doesn’t always get done at the end of a long, tiring day. Starting the day off with something simple like walking or 20 minutes of some other type of exercise will just be a bonus if you get your gym time in at the end of the day.

Feed Your Mind for 20 Minutes Each Morning

Lifelong learning is one of the traits all successful real estate investors and entrepreneurs share. Spending just 20 minutes each morning reading educational or inspirational books or listening to CD’s is all it takes. Ask yourself what you need today.  Do you need inspiration to get you out of your funk or do you just want to educate your mind today? Whatever the answer is, start each day off with some brain food.

Visualization and Meditation

Here is a quick explanation of how you can easily integrate these two things into your life.

Mediation

The very mention of the word meditation sends some people running.

Meditation is in reality nothing more than learning to quiet your mind. Most people are familiar with Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich” which was first published in 1937. It is one of the greatest books ever written. In his book, Napoleon Hill talks about his process of “sitting for answers” which is now what we call meditation.

He would go into a room with a pad of paper and a pen, close the door and sit quietly (sometimes with his eyes closed) for extended periods of time and “wait for answers” to his questions and his problems. I find it fascinating that this man figured this process out so long ago and used it so successfully in his business. Learning to slow down and quiet your mind is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.

Most real estate investors are like other entrepreneurs. They are idea people; they have vision and can see the big picture. An entrepreneur’s mind is prone to racing around all the time because of these very traits. They often have trouble maintaining focus. These same people are also prone to “shiny object syndrome”. They start something and then something else catches their eye. Almost immediately their mind says, “Hey look over here at this brand new thing that would be great for my business”.

So take a little time each day to quiet your mind and “sit for answers”. I can promise you that 10 minutes of meditation will also restore your sanity at the end of one of those terrible days that we all encounter from time to time.

Visualization

Visualization is a process that you are supposed to do at the end of your quiet time or meditation. Spend a few minutes and go over each and every one of your goals in your mind. See them as already being complete. How do you feel now that you have achieved your goals? How has your life changed? What does it look like now? Take a few minutes to actually feel the success.

You know what they say, “you have to see it in your mind before it can come into your world”. That is how we set concrete goals and achieve them. We have to have a clear vision of where we intend to go and what we intend to create.

It is a small habit that if done each day will create massive change in every area of your life over time.

    Excellent article. This process is what led me to RE investing and to find BP. Unfortunately I have fallen away from this, but your article is just what I needed to get moving again. One thing I found useful was during the exercise time to listen to audio books (I started with Rich Dad) or better yet the BP podcast. Thanks again.

      Both are great choices, and you are killing two birds with one stone so to speak.

      One thing to remember is that you will get different things out of the same material everytime you re-read a book or listen to an audio again. That’s because you will be at a different level of experience. Good material is meant to be “revisited” from time to time.

  2. Thanks Sharon, great article again. All of the above is so very true. The trick is actually doing it! I am good some weeks/months and then can slip back into not doing it! Then if I’m not feeling so good, I take a look at my activities and sure enough, I am not taking care of myself! It is so important! Thanks again!

  3. Hi Sharon, thanks for the article! Along the same lines, I have been practicing yoga regularly for the last 3+ years. Some people describe yoga as “meditation in motion” and it certainly works that way for me,combining exercise and meditation into one.

    Even better, our studio recently introduced Yoga Nidra which is a 45-minute guided meditation practice, during which you focus on what you want to see in your life just like Hill’s “sitting for answers.” I was very skeptical at first because I can’t sit still for more than a nano-second but the teacher is a friend and also a real estate investor and she talked me into it. I loved it and it has given me a great kick – start on “sitting for answers.”

    You can find lots of Yoga Nidra meditation sound tracks on iTunes and all over the web. I highly recommend.

  4. Omg, this is such a great post.

    I typically get up like I’ve been shot out of a cannon…. I do, however, slow down and smell the roses at the end of each day. I like to meditate on all the good things that happened.

    Speaking of meditating, that word does freak people out. I like to explain it very much like you did, meditating is just being still and listening. We’re all great at throwing up prayers for what we want; not so good at being quiet and listening.

      When you said, “I typically get up like I’ve been shot out of a cannon”, that is exactly what I do too. I can’t help but think that it’s not really good for us to start our days like that. We all feel like we have to be doing something every minute.

      Being quiet and listening for those answers takes practice for a lot of people and I tell them just start with 5 or 10 minutes. You know from personal experience that after you have done it; quieted your mind for even 15 or 20 minutes, you just feel wonderful.

      When my granddaughter is tense and has trouble going to sleep, I will sit with her sometimes for a few minutes. I will rub her back and just get her to focus on breathing slowly. It is very calming even for a 12 year old.

      I love the phrase Napoleon Hill used; “sitting for answers”.

    Great article! When I was 18 years old I read two books that helped shape my mind for the future – The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale and Think & Grow Rich by Napolean Hill. I still have a paper I wrote in High School about the Power of Positive Thinking…don;t ask me why at 40 I still have a high scholl term paper! But each of those books had a profound effect on me and I love how the Hour of Power fits into the framework that each of them talk about. With the right mindset, and the hour of power certainly helps get you there, anything is possible.

      I have read both of those books multiple times, and I would have to say the same thing. I would also add “Think and Grow Rich” to that list. I read that little book again periodically too. Napoleon Hill talks about having a positive mindset and being willing to “pay the price” for success. He asks, “what are you willing to give in return”?

      You probably will show that paper to your kids one day and tell that story.

  6. I have been in business for ~ 2years and seeing the next ‘shinny object’ is so easy to do. It is very distracting and takes you away from your objective. For many people it is one of the largest hindrances keeping them from obtaining their goal.
    Rising early in the morning for the power hour is a wonderful exercise. It gives you focus and direction for the day.

  7. I thought the hour of power was doing a shot of beer every minute for an hour? That was what I learned in college anyway. Ha.

    I’ve been doing 30 minutes of exercise while listening to an audiobook or podcast each morning. Great way to start the day. I should get back into meditating. Also, I am adding “The Success Principles…” to my Audible.com wishlist now!

      That’s funny and it’s might just be true for some college students.

      You already have 2 of the 3 down pat. Meditation is great for stress relief and for focus. Any time you can “quiet your” mind for even a few minutes, you will almost always get back on track and get your focus back.

      Definitely pick up that book. I just started re-reading it again. It is one of those books I really use; I take notes, put check marks beside certain points, and I learn something new every time I read it.
