Mind Over Matter: Are You Standing in the Way of Your Own Entrepreneurial Success?

My 12-year old daughter is a bit shy and timid in nature. And she’s never shown any interest in sports of any kind. Nevertheless, she recently expressed interest in playing soccer. A bit surprisingly, she made the team. After the try-outs, her coach told her that “she was not afraid of anyone” and would make a good addition to the team.

Not afraid of anyone? Really, my daughter? Clearly this coach saw something in here that I did not.

Then an interesting thing happened. My daughter came home and declared that she was not afraid of anyone. And in fact, she started behaving that way. Instead of holding back and trying to avoid contact with the ball, she moved towards it aggressively. Since then, her confidence has sky rocketed.

What is reality, then, really? Is she shy or is she fearless? The answer is “yes.” She is whatever she decides she is. More accurately, she is what she declares and believes. This reality may not be outwardly visible at the time, but it will surely be over time.

Can We Determine Our Reality With Our Minds?

I think as real estate entrepreneurs, we fall short of what we can achieve because we don’t declare that which we want to be or achieve.

I interviewed Paul Hutchings on one of my podcasts. He spoke about a complete transformation of his personal and professional life after having begun affirming that which he wanted to be and achieve.

He was literally living in a trailer home with his wife, barely getting by. After having re-read the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, he began his daily affirmations. One of his affirmations was that he would  make $3,000 per month from his internet business. He said it took many weeks for him to believe his own affirmations and 6 months for his affirmations to become reality.

Mind Over Matter

I tested this “mind over matter” theory recently after reading The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. In it, he postulates that your body only needs as much sleep as you tell it.

I know for a fact that this is untrue because I tested this extensively over the last few years. I have concluded that my body needs exactly eight and a half hours of sleep. I can do less for a day or two, but will pay dearly for it on the third day, when I will crash and sleep for 12 hours straight.

But I decided to give Hal a shot. He seemed to know what he was talking about. So I told my body that from hereon forward it needed one hour less sleep per night. Then I set my alarm for 6 a.m., a long hour before my normal waking time.

Amazingly, I woke up at 6 a.m. without feeling tired all day long. This continued all week. I was waiting for the typical crash and burn that Friday night, but it never came.

I’ve now been sleeping an hour less per night for the last 3 months.

Perhaps it’s true that reality is what we think it to be. We think, and therefore, it is. If this were true, what would be the implications to our lives? To our real estate investing aspirations?

I think the potential is staggering.

Perhaps it’s possible that we hold ourselves back simply by thinking small. If we could start thinking bigger, maybe our reality would expand to fill the size of our dreams.

Maybe these daily affirmations we read about aren’t all a bunch of hooey, but instead perhaps they can shape our future.

Now my question to you is, what kind of experience have you had with affirmations and visualizations? Compared to others out there, I am but a newbie with regard to mindset practices and therefore would love to hear from you.

    Hi Michael,

    Amen. It’s about time someone wrote about this subject 🙂

    I’ve been using visualization (and a plethora of other techniques) to “create my reality” but like most mortals, I have been prone to fall into negative thinking when the going gets tough so to speak… so while I have manifested some pretty miraculous things over the years, some areas of my life are still suffering and need a good jolt of powerful energy to make things happen!

    Your post is rather serendipitous to say the least. My landlord just announced that his daughter quit her job and is moving back “home” and I am being (literally) thrown out of the room I am renting from him so she can move into it and I’m forced to find a place to live or sleep on the couch (and live out of suitcases) until I do. He gave me 2 weeks notice. Needless to say, I’m supercharging my powers of manifestation to find a home for myself. The rents here are very high and my income is low. I’m way past the age of “roommate living” so this is going to be my biggest challenge yet to test my faith in the Universe to deliver what it is that I want (and believe that I can and deserve to have).

    Being “realistic” is the surest way to failure – one literally has to think in terms of miracles (I know because it’s happened to me more times than I can count) and therein lies the challenge!

    Anyway, I digress… but YES. Visualization and affirmations WORK but here’s the key: You have to BELIEVE it in order for it to manifest. Without an ounce of doubt. And the fastest way to manifesting those affirmations and visualizations is to FEEL what it is you want to create. It’s the emotion behind it that fuels the manifestation. So I’ve been going to open houses (houses that are technically out of my price range but are the kind of house I want to live in) so that I can FEEL what it’s like to live there. The subconscious mind can’t tell the difference between fiction and reality – so if you can convince yourself that what you’re experiencing or thinking of is REAL to you, then the subconscious mind will go ahead and deliver it without judgment.

    Great article! This is what Napoleon Hill’s “Think & Grow Rich” stresses that as you think and declare it, followed by planned action, so shall it be. We have to believe in ourselves and give ourselves doable and achievable steps to get to where we want to be in live. Dream, plan, and out into action. Mistakes will help learn and succeed faster than not trying at all.

    Great article. Apparently I’ve been telling myself(or listening to what others have been telling me) for all of my life I am what I don’t want to be, so this is taking some time to reverse. But it has to work. I don’t believe in “mind over matter” over matter over matter over mind but I believe there’s no difference, that we can make universal changes from either approach whether it be an improved thought or improved exercise or diet regime. But persistence, discipline, patience and faith are definitely necessary for whatever approach.
