The trees need to be removed, especially if you are going with the lining approach as the roots will eventually poke through.To get a meaningful answer, you need to call a few plumbers to look at your specific situation.

Of course, confirm it is up to code as a fire pit (or inground wood burning BBQ, if need be called that) and your insurance company is OK with it.I would remove the plants near the house to reduce potential combustibles.
