In my limited but 1st hand experience it can be tricky to secure a desirable vacation home aka consumption item for your family vs a good STR.

This is America, follow the money and the power. my thought is you would have anarchy but we are seeing it with food stamps in certain markets those receiving them as a way of life and multi generational.. cant buy junk food soda and sugar snacks and there is some shock to the system for those mothers who were baby factories. 

I'm not a fan of using my primary residence or retirement accounts for business or consumption items.

As well as price support given the international consumption rate of gold by assorted governments.

I would look at it for what it is: a consumption item and if it makes sense that way any rental income will be the icing on the cake.
