The simplest business model for a rookie is a single family home. 

Im wondering if I'd have better luck making more money off of multi family elsewhere.can anyone tell me what markets they'd recommend for house hacking/ multi family and if Chicago is still a good choice? 

Majority of multi family is separately metered so the tenants pay utilities.

My family has an unoccupied single family home, 3/2, in Houston (77048) built in the early 1960s that they are willing to give me (transfer the title). 

I would not consider a duplex multi family although it does have some of the characteristics.
