Don’t do RE instead of school, add it to your plate so you can be a high performing member of your community and network.

You would then take out the existing switch plate and switch, feed the wires into the back of the Wiremold box, and then screw the Wiremold box on to the existing box. 

Read the manufacturer's instructions, but generally 1/4" - 5/16" of gap along the wall (measured from the bottom plate if your drywall is 1/2" off the floor as it should be) is ample expansion space and easily covered by the baseboard.

@Tuesday Goodband I currently live in China where carpet is virtually nonexistent.

1/4” drill bit and a drill will get you in, unless it’s a higher end schlage some of them are hardened or have a hardened plate around the knob.
