I am fairly new to Real Estate Investing (REI) as well and I am also Active Duty USMC. 

And sure, I could probably get the same experience from skydiving or bungee jumping but then again, do those activities offer the same monetary return as real estate?

I'm currently living in Uptown, a north side neighborhood with a ton of gang activity and crime, but my block is quiet and serene.

What was hot and cool in 2012 may be dead now in 2016 and too be honest I have not see much activity from Domu the last few years.  

Personally I don't think an area with a population less than 1M would have the culture/sports/arts activity you are looking for.

I've read that the VA lets active duty take out a second VA loan and rent out their current home if they are relocated due to the military.
