Any tips on how to make a homemade weed killer for sidewalk cracks and along foundations besides expensive roundup.
Thanks,
your too OLD of gas for your lawn mower and snow blower. Or ask a farmer to give or sell you some pure roundup,,,theirs is about 10% cost of your ready to use stuff and mix it sorta strong.
Also a non selective like Pramatol gives season long control, but dont let it bleed into lawn area.
Unless it it pure bluegrass a good dose of 2 --4 -D takes care of annoying little creeper weeds that usually like those cracks.
Don- what is the selective Pramatol? Rich
Pouring gasoline purposefully on the ground is against the law. EPA fines run up to $30,000, and cleanup can cost much more. A bottle of weed killer is around $15.
NON selective herbicide for use around grain bins, buildings,,,where you want NOTHING to grow.
ever notice if you fill the lawn mower on the grass and accidentally run it over a bit nothing grows. Where do most people put their rotten gas??? But for heaven sakes dont do anything illegal,,,they would make a bigger case than the gulf fiasco out of it. What is the 'proper' disposal method for rotten gas,,,nobody here takes it.???
Rotten gas? Buy it in small quantities and use it up quickly. If you get to the end of summer (or whatever) and have a half a gallon left, add it to your car. Add some sta-bil to it if you're going to have it around a long time. Absolutely no reason to be dumping gas on the ground.
A weedeater makes short work of weeds growing in cracks.
for the record I dont want to see gas poured out either.
Let me substitute another idea for that then,,boiling hot WATER kills weeds as good as anything else and is environmental friendly if you dont burn yourself doing it.
I just read that white vinegar kills weeds. Haven't tried it yet myself, but what does a gallon of that stuff cost? A few bucks?
honestly any generic weed killer with 2-4-D in it will work. just look for that ingredient on the label and you will be good to go.
also, for areas such as mulch beds a granulated herbicide like Preen works great. just spread some at the beginning of spring and you will be weed free in your mulch beds.
If it is just for cracks in the sidewalk, boiling water works.
You can use a combination of salt and white vinegar to kill weeds.
Fire weeding works. When weed just emerge and are tender, run a weed burner over them. No need to burn them, just wilt them.
Costly Roundup? Get serious. Buy the concentrate and mix your own. It's $2 a gal or $2.80 a gallon if you buy the tough weed version.
anyone here tried boric acid, the powder. you know, the stuff they use to kill roaches
I have used vinegar before and it works GREAT for what you're looking for-in cracks and along the foundation. Just pour it in a spray bottle and let it go-it's so cheap you can really spray it down.
Just the other week I actually used the vinegar mix. The next day those things looked dead, except some that I think I haven't covered properly.
I read a quarter cup of salt per gallon of vinegar (some say 20% acidity, but I used 5%), and then i added some dish soap. The mix is not critical, not sure what the soap is for.
Apparently, if covered properly, the crack will be quiet for a couple of years.
the soap takes the waxy coating off and makes the plant take more killer inside it. doesnt take much either.
Gonna try the vinegar and salt tomorrow
sidewalk police here says NO grass in the cracks allowed.
Old Geezer just recommended we try cheap powdered laundry soap on the cracks - tried it out and weeds and grass are dying off. Perhaps if we combined the boiling water and white vinegar on top of this they would go faster?
