Old window shutters

I will be doing small renovations to my grandmothers old home in a few days. Her old shutters are white, yet rusted very badly with brown rust stains over them. The shutters are made out of some type of metal. Is it possibe for me to take them down, spray paint them back white, and put them up again? Also, are there any good videos on how to re-install window shutters?

Have you considered buying plastic shutters? They're not expensive and come in a variety of colors.
