Adverse Posession

Hello Everyone

This may be a dumb question but I been reading a few books on real estate trying to educate myself and the topic of the last chapter was adverse possession. Basically, what I gathered was that if you move into an abandoned or unoccupied preoperty and pay preoperty taxes on it for a given period of time, you can sue for title in state court and win the property? How is this not considered trespassing?
