I get alot of these and many without any message and I don't know who they are or what they want. I am not sure why are requesting. (I guess I am not much of a "networker")
My email address is in my sig and I would much rather them send me an email than a PM.
Should I accept? Is there a "risk" to accepting? I don't want to offend by denying or ignoring. Do they get a notice that I have denied them?

Thanks

Eric, yes they will get a notice that you declined them and it will probably put you in a poor light by being so rude! They must have that status to PM you here on the site.

Many don't email since you never know what will happen with your email address out there, I'm not really sure but I hear it can cause problems, so the PM here is much safer, especially if someone wants to date you!

The requests only cost you a dollar a month each, so it's no big deal. I have over 300 followers and colleagues here, so it's pretty cheap really to have that many people that I can PM day or night and answer questions. Good luck, Bill

LOL, just kidding, there is no charge!

Eric,
I guess it is just for the networking and ability to PM if you are not a PRO member. I don't have a lot of colleagues, but of the ones that I do have, I either have sent a note with the request or they did. Maybe we will learn some other benefits!

If not at the PRO level of membership, members must be colleagues to engage in the PM feature.

I have already posted that I refuse to accept requests that have no introductory message - and that's not ME being rude by refusing these. I liken this to being at the REIA meetings and having somebody shove their business card at you and then running along without even saying "Hi"; colleague requests without an introductory message are no different IMO. I ignore the people handing out business cards like this, and I'll ignore the colleague request of such members. Just because this is on the internet does not permit people to forget to remember their manners.

Once you become colleagues, you are then at risk of other members messaging you via both PM and email (if you have that in your profile only).

Now Eric, since you are offering something (financing) that people will be requesting, you may be turning down opportunities for business. But sometimes you just have to determine whether these users have any respect for your time, since they choose to message you without any greetings, and they will message you without any subject as well.

Real Estate Investor · Springfield, Missouri

Good points Steve, I accept all requests and 90+% have a message. Something people should be aware of is that those intro messages are limited and I can see a that a longer message was sent, but I did not get it. Also, my list was probably not set up in the order of when they replied but in alphabetical order. I don't know who they are at first so I csan't locate them to answer. But my email is always full from BPer's so I guess it works out just fine.

Well, had my fun for the day, I'm outta here! Good night all.

Landlord · Seattle, Washington

IMO building contacts and networking is a big part of BP. The information and resources here are the second part.

I agree with Steve though that sending a message with the colleague request is a much better approach.

Ha! Now that's funny!

I agree with Steve. Why would a person send you a Colleague Request without a message? Seems rather impersonal, at best. It seems to me that most of the Colleages I communicate with is by email. Occasionally we chat via PM. However, seems you need to be Colleages with most members to see the email. Either way is fine with me!

About 2 weeks ago someone began following me but I couldn't understand why he'd want to - left no message. A few days ago I saw someone from Philly and asked to follow them. I left a message saying that he could add me to his buyers list. I didn't really want to follow just to write that but you have to do it that way when you no pay.

I agree it's weird when people begin following without even indicating why.

Real Estate Investor · Audubon, Pennsylvania

Following is one thing, since that is just tracking your BP activities. Colleague level is needed for messaging - that is a mutual following. Anybody is free to follow anybody else here.

Real Estate Investor · sioux falls, South Dakota

Most of my requests have said something like" enjoy your posts etc". I've never turned down a request, and have had hundreds of PMs that I wouldn't have had otherwise. Rich

Real Estate Investor · Audubon, Pennsylvania

Rich,

I agree that most will say something just like you mentioned. But those that don't have the time or effort to say something, I'll still choose to ignore. I will offer help when they post in the forums regardless of being colleagues or not, so the colleague status is simply to facilitate them to message privately.

Real Estate Investor · Austin, Texas

One of the issues I have had with colleague requests is that people genuinely reach out and type something lengthy in the box and I can't see all of it. Am I missing something here?

Bryan,
That is true for me also. However when I get a colleague request, I also get a notification in my email. When I look at it there, I see the entire message. I also like that because I can save it if I desire to refer to later. The colleague requests (unless I'm missing something) aren't saved anywhere on BP. Once I accept them, I can't get to the message they sent with the request.

Landlord · Seattle, Washington

Jackie, I think that is something new. I've just started getting these email notifications as well. A great enhancement to the request.

Real Estate Investor · Chandler, Arizona

i am fairly new to BP and didn't quite understand what i was doing when i started following. i didn't realize that once i followed someone and didn't also send a colleague request that i would not be able to later send a colleague request. if i try to unfollow and try to refollow to send a colleague request that too will not give me a chance to send a colleague request. the only option that shows is unfollow. i've sent a couple of requests for help to see if i can change my follow request to a colleague request but have not gotten a response. am i missing something? i thought i went through follow and colleague instructions but have not been able to find a solution...

you may try to go to their individual profiles and if they have a blog set up it will give the option to colleague again

Sammy,
Thanks for helping Aimee! A month with no response to her request for help is awful! Sorry we all took so long to help Aimee!

Well I typically clicked the follow button and then just check the box to get a colleage request too.

Sometimes I typed a message and sometimes I didn't. I really had no idea it made a difference to people. If I am following and or sending that request though, its because I have learned something from you, or see a value in having contact in the future.

Glad I read this now though, so I know to always type something in that box. BTW, it says (optional) right beside it. Which is why I only typed in there when I felt compelled to.

Real Estate Investor · Chandler, Arizona

thanks @sammy for your suggestion! i'll try your suggestion if they have a blog. if they don't it's the boat i failed to jump onto when i had the chance. @jimmy now i know better and am more careful when i start a follow to request a colleague request too.

hopefully a colleague request feature will be available at a later date.

thanks everyone for all your feedback! have a great weekend!
