We finally got a good governor in Wisconsin (one of the last two states that do not allow conceal carry in the country). So I anticipate being able to conceal carry soon. Some questions for those of you who conceal carry.

-what type of weapon do you carry?
-preference to a certain holster?
-for what purpose do you conceal (landlord, being prepared, etc)
-for those in the Midwest, how do you handle the winter months? Does heavy clothing interfere with your ability to draw fast?

thank you in advance for your input. I plan on carrying most of the time, but always when I am on the job as a landlord. Not sure if I want to buy a body holster, hip holster, etc.

This is a first for me on BP!

Permitted in 2000, 9mm, various holsters, when the situation presented itself (mostly on trips...but that's another story).

Quick draw? LOL! The last quick draw in Springfield, Mo. was Wyatt Earp on the town square after a polker game where he re-acquired his watch.

As you go through your required class (I hope you take a class) I hope you'll learn that the element of surprise is your best advantage, not standing for a dual! With a large coat, you can carry in a pocket, you might ruin a coat, but you don't have to take it out in a pinch....I hope this doesn't get into all kinds of fantasy situations.....

Now, since there are so many places you can't carry, public parks in my area, banks, stores, resturants..epecially where they serve booze, it's better to keep the thing in the car if it's out at all, IMO.

For a couple of years, off and on, I was in situations where a weapon was required. I've been walking the streets in cities all over this country, not war zones, but let's say areas of some concern sometimes and never needed a weapon as a citizen. Never! Being prepared? For what? A bank robbery? Some gang member try to roll me? While the I have been confronted a few times, I never needed a weapon. Many times, I carried a weapon for my job over ten years, actiually, it's a PITA, especially when you must carry it.

While I support the notion of conceal and carry, being armed is an great responsibility to the public and should never be taken with a maucho attitude that so many have, IMO, when they carry, as if they are Wyatt Earp!

thank you for your input. Some of it was helpful. Not that I have to justify myself, but I've been a responsible gun owner for many years. I have no fantasy of shooting in the middle of the streets at high noon.

At any rate, just because you have never had to draw a weapon, it does not mean that you never will need to. Just like learning CPR. You hope you never have to use it, but it's good to have JUST IN CASE. Being prepared for criminal activity, which happens all the time across the country. Again, the purpose of this discussion is to get practical input from responsible gun owners such as myself, not to justify my need to anyone. But thanks anyway.

Also, Bill, have you ever evicted someone and the last words to you are..."I'm going to get you". Just curious.

Real Estate Investor · Springfield, Missouri

Evictions? Have no idea, how many, over a hundred I'm sure.

Just having the claim to being a responsible gun owner is not sufficient under the law, or in any pratcticle matter, of having responsiblities of carrying a weapon on the streets! Just because one never shot anyone on a hunting trip does not prepare you at all in a combat shooting situation, that's why I suggest the class.

Didn't mean at all that you need to justify yourself.

As to your last statement....sounded like a threat....LOL!

Paranoia stikes deep, into you mind it will creep.....

That's super. Now let's move on to the subject at hand.

Real Estate Investor · Wisconsin

I found a post from MikeOH that sums things up pretty well...

"If I knew when one of the many drug dealer scumbags that I have evicted will appear and want revenge, then I wouldn't go there at that time of day. If I knew when a tenant I evicted and made homeless would be at Walmart, then I wouldn't go there at that time. If I knew when some unstable mail delivery guy was going to go postal at McDonalds, I would pack my lunch that day. Unfortunately, I don't get the schedule of dangerous times and places, so I carry my gun anytime I'm working. When you're working in low-income neighborhoods, any time could be dangerous. You never know when some hopped up meth addict will be walking down the street and decide that he needs your money.

I carry a Baretta 3032 (32 cal) Tomcat with frangible rounds for added safety in apartment buildings and other close quarters. It is a semi-automatic, 8 shot pistol, double action on the first shot. It is remarkably accurate for such a small gun. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a little difficult to decock after you've fired that first shot (due to the small hammer). It has a very unusual barrel which tilts up, allowing the chambered round to be removed and I usually acutate that before attempting to decock it.

I would like to carry something with a little more power, but it is difficult to conceal anything larger and still work with it (doing the maintenance, climbing on roofs, etc). I also like the reliability of the Baretta, which has never misfired and is very well built. My wife and I both have Baretta trap guns and I have found their performance to be outstanding.

I wear mine with a belt type holster (on my side during the winter, under a hooded sweatshirt and a little farther back during the summer, under a hawaiian shirt. My wife and I do go to the range occassionally. We usually make a day of it, shooting some targets and then dinner. What could be better?

"And hey, if you'd like to bring up some legal issues that would be great"

Legal issues? There are plenty of them. However, as they used to say in the military " it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6" !

rich23s --

There are many online forums devoted to concealed carry, with many different opinions as to caliber, round, model, holster, etc. I learned a lot from reading them.

Most agree that you will end up with a box full of holsters as you try out different types.

Although I own a couple of Glock 9s which I like for various reasons, I bought a Colt LCR 5-shot 38 special for concealed carry.

Pro's: it is small, has an enclosed hammer, and because it is a wheel gun should never jam or stovepipe.

Con's: 5-shots (but I carry a speed strip with 6 additional rounds; and, please, Lord never let me be in a situation where I need any rounds at all), Also, opinions differ on how 'effective' a 38 special round is for self defense.

For carry, winter through summer, I wear 5.11 tactical pants (either shorts or slacks) with a big roomy back pocket that easily holds my LCR inside a Desantis holster. LApolicegear.com usually has good prices.

Personally, I hate guns. I'm not a plinker, collector, or gun enthusiast of any kind. But as MikeOH and others have said: "When seconds count the cops are only minutes away."

I also think that the more law-abiding citizens carry concealed weapons, the more law abiding there will be.

Mike changed up his carry to a Glock 23, same as the FBI. There's a lot of good data behind the Glock 23.

I thought he went to the Glock 22. Where is he, anyway?

It was either 22 or 23. Very similar guns. 22 is just a little larger. Not sure where he's at. Probably just busy.

Both of those guns are too big. I really dont like Glock and I really dont like .40 cal in smaller guns.

The SIG 290 is the new "hot" gun to carry. I have a lot of guns but I LOVE a sigs. When we get to carry in WI, I will be carrying the sig 290 with CORBON 115Grain JHP.

I have a ruger LCP with crimson trace grips and I hate it. I have a Taurus CIA 650 but revolvers are too bulky. I have a Smith and Wesson MandP 9 compact that is okay. Also check out the SIG 229 and 239. Everything in 9mm. I think this is the best carry round becasue it creates small guns.

If you live in the cold like we do, you will want to switch to Hornady Critical Defense so that the HP does not get stuck in the jackets folks tend to wear.

Nice topic. Recently got a AK-223 which I like. Here in CA you never know what to expect.

Correction: I have a _RUGER_ LCR and not a Colt.

Sheesh... I told you I wasn't 'into' guns. But God bless those who are so I can learn from them.

I have a friend who's a Fed in DC. She's about 5'6 and 100 lbs. and she carries the Glock 23 without any problems. As I've carried more, I've figured out the key to carry is the right belt and the right holster.

Actually, I should stress that Rich. Really invest in a good gun belt and a quality holster (no Uncle Mike's - get a Serpa or a Galco or something like that, Serpa's are fantastic, imho). A good gun belt and quality holster will help you carry comfortably throughout the day and is very important for safety as a weak holster and a weak belt will make it easier for a gun to "print" (show under your clothing) or even fall out. We had an accidental discharge at a fair down here when a gun fell out of a holster and fired. No one was hurt but it could have been a lot worse.

There is never a need to justify yourself for using a Constitutional right. That's all I'm going to say on that topic outside the politics room.
