I'd give the same sort of advice as for RE books. Rather than a specific one, go to the library or bookstore and thumb through a bunch. The right book depends on what you're trying to do. Any book on house plants will probably be good for the indoors. Outdoors things are more complex. You really want something localized for your specific conditions. Some books concentrate on plant combinations, which as our gardens have become more elaborate becomes more important. Others are on design.
I'll give another twist on Curtis' good advice and recommend you find some good stores in your area. Not any sort of big box or chain, though I've ran into knowledgable people at Home Depot and Lowes. We have two local, family-owned stores new me. One very large with a huge selection but rather high prices and another much smaller but cheaper one. Both have great help, though. They can really help you understand what works and what doesn't specifically in your area.
