Ceramic tile upstairs in 4-plex?

Question

Is this possible or wise?  The building was built in 1978, wood frame, etc.  The downstairs is cement slab... is ceramic tile too heavy to put in the upstairs units (this is a rental)?  If it is possible, is it loud for those  in the unit downstairs?

On a second floor you will need a minimum of 3/4" plywood glued and screwed 12" on center into the joists. Probably wouldn't hurt to have two. They should run in the opposite direction. This is to make sure the floor doesn't move and crack the tile out. I've done this on a second floor with great results. You also probably want to use porcelain instead of ceramic for a floor area as it is more durable.

Tile is actually a sound barrier versus wood which transfers sound very well. That's why musical instruments are made out of wood. If you have concerns about sound you could insulate with batts inbetween the joists.

I think this is over kill.  The bath is probably small and as long as there is no "spring" in the floor and the subfloor is sound, you should be able to put down 1/4" luan or cement board and tile over it.  Your joists should be 16" on center and that should be just fine.  I do this in all of my new condos with 3.5" floor trusses on 19.2 centers w/3/4" T&G OSB and 1/4" luan.

Thanks everyone...one thing to add if you don't mind, do you all think that tile upstairs would better mitigate any water issues from the usual suspects, toilet leak, sink, I have seen it all....I mean as opposed to carpet or wood upstairs.  (Downstairs have tile already)

And the tile is almost certainly not too heavy.  If it is you have serious structural and safety issues.

You can put in a rubber subfloor.  I had to put that in an upstairs condo I owned in order to install hardwood flooring.
