Mobile Website Questions

We are looking into going mobile with our website and would like some feedback. I am confused about:

1. Making a current website viable through mobile devices and searchable in mobile networks.

2. A separate mobile website.

Should you do one or both of these? What design and hosting services are recommended and why? I appreciate the feedback in advance.

Some sites that do not have mobile apps still work fine when browsing with a smart phone. Have you tried googlig and/or browsing your website with your own smart phone (assuming you use one) yet? It might be fine the way it is.
