free credit check??

Question

Has anyone ever tried getting their "free credit report card" from Experian on credit.com?? If so, is it really accurate? And does it really not affect your credit score like they claim??

If you go to annualcreditreport.com you can check your credit one time per year from each of the three credit bureau.  This will not affect your score.   One thing to note is you will not get a "score" for free, just a report.  The scores usually run 7-10 dollars.

I think the fine print on those "free credit scores" is enrollment in some sort of program with they charge you each month.  As James stated, go to annualreportreport.com and get your free report there.

Better yet, get one every 4 months from one of the three reporting agencies, so that you're rotating them and checking your report 3 times per year.

There seems to be confusion here, indicating that you need to sign up for an additional service to get free reports.  By going to annualcreditreport.com you can indeed get one free credit report per year from each of the three agencies.  This doesn't include your score, and you can add that on for a fee, but the full report is completely free with no strings attached.  This is the only free service authorized by the government.

I would recommend that you put a note on your calendar every 4 months to check one agency at a time, that way you can stay updated through out the year.

+1.  That is exactly what I do.  Throw Credit Karma in the mix with that strategy and you should always have a pretty good idea of what your credit report looks like.

Credit Karma is OK for a free score but its only TransUnion and most of the time is off by 40-65 points.

I would say use Equifax.com/freetrial you will get the first month FREE and they pull all 3 scores, as long as you cancel within 30 days you wont be charged at all.

If for some reason you happen to forget they will charge you $17.95 a month until you cancel.
