Experience: Previously, we owned condos in the early 1980's in British Columbia. When the market crashed up there, we lost almost everything we had, and it spooked us for a long time. Eventually, over time, we were able to get back on our feet and purchase our own home(s). We learned not to overextend ourselves, and to have a cushion in place, when times are bad. Currently, in addition to owning our own home, we have purchased rental properties in the last 6 years. We bought an SFR in Washington State in 2011, another one in 2012 and a 4-plex in Oregon in 2013 for the purpose of cash flow. Real Estate Goals: My real estate goals are to purchase some additional properties for the purpose of cash flow. Now that we are retired, we would prefer to not touch our savings for the purpose of living and to not be dependent on social security since the government may or may not be able to provide that in the future. I want to learn how to better use the equity in the properties we currently own.
