Im looking for info in my local area on past sales. What sold, for how much, time on market etc. Where would I start looking?

you need access to MLS...the site is for realtors only...in my case it was worthwhile to get a license in order to have access to all MLS listings and sales info...also MLS allows to search by property address which will pull up old listings, some older listings have pics and other info that most bank owned and short sale listings dont have...most bank owned deals just list a basic line or 2 about contract rules etc...

zillow can show comparable sales - you just have to not believe the zestimate amount for valuation.
county websites can sometimes be searched for this sort of info too, depending on what data they provide and how their search interface is set up.
Your title company can also pull comps for you.
Anyone with access to MLS can provide the info you are in search for.

You should also look into your local government. Most county clerks maintain a website with property records that are often available to the public online for free. For example, in Syracuse, NY you can look up property info at the following site, which includes name of owners, tax info, sale dates and transaction amounts, etc:
http://www.ongov.net/Realproptax/taxinformation.html
In some counties, they charge a fee to access this info online.
While government sites can be of a help for a specific property, it does nothing to answer the last half of his question.
How long on the market?
I am in agreement with Will on this one.
Look into a good title company, develop an relationship with them because you will need one anyway with your future RE dealings.
