The End of Mom & Pop Real Estate Investing

I wanted to get you all's expert opininons. For the past few months, I have heard so much negativity about investing coming to an end for mom & pop investors. The reason for this is due to hedge funds, private equity firms, pension funds and so on buying up real estate. I have notice that less and less homes are being released into the market, but I have also notice a huge number of vacant properties that haven't been foreclosed on yet. Now, do you believe our fiscal cliff is coming to an end, and if so, what should we be doing to adapt to the market place? As much as possible, lets state real facts as we know them, and very real solutions. Thanks!
