I was a tenant for 6.5 years and would still be there but I am no longer renting! Chilon and her team were always very attentive and supportive whenever I needed anything. They made sure the property stayed in great condition for the owners and the tenant which I appreciated. One time, we had a pipe burst early in the morning and Chilon was there as soon as possible to help in any way she could. I dealt with some other personal issues and she called me personally to offer her support. Strict requirements mean high quality people are renting the properties but it also means that the property management cares, which I would imagine is reassuring for the homeowners. If I had an investment property that I was able to rent out, I would definitely use them for that very reason. This is a well run company in my experience as a long term tenant.

This past week I contacted this company to see a home in Durham. My husband and I sold our home yesterday and so we were looking to rent before deciding on what state to move to. Initially, no one got back to us so I called. My husband mentioned that he eventually was contacted back with a confirmation to see the home Friday at one (automated reply). My husband decided to see if we could see the home on Thursday instead and he said that the person seemed like he was being a bother and didn’t want to show the home. My husband said he was informed all their agents were busy Thursday. Then he asked for earlier Friday if possible and the contact said he didn’t know, and that he has to check. My husband waited on a reply and never got any. Finally my husband just texted back that we would keep the appointment for Friday at 1 since the person did not get back to him. On my end, I was instructed to fill out a form to see if we even qualify which I knew we did. Both are credit scores are over 700, we have no debt, and make 150,000 a year. We owned out last 2 homes and sold the recent one for 700,000 after living there nearly 5 years. We are fine financially. They asked for us to send our license and we did. Now they had our licenses before my husband was corresponding with the agent so they were aware of our race. We are black for reference. We drove nearly 3 hours to see the home, spent 300 on a hotel, at 11 am we got a confirmation for our 1 pm appointment so we headed to the home. As we sat in the driveway waiting for the agent my husband realized that they sent a cancelation soon after the confirmation with a list of general possibilities why it was canceled. No phone call and not personal text. An auto generated text that it was canceled. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. No one called to give a reason so I texted the previous number that asked for a copy of our licenses. The reply was… I am sorry Ms. Turner, we were told that we have an accepted applicant. My reply was… Just curious why you didn't mention that you had an applicant before? We wouldn't have come this far had we known. There has been no reply. No phone call to suggest other property that are available or anything. The home is still on the market to rent. It has been on the market for 70 days but the day we ask to see it, it’s all of a sudden taken but still on Zillow listed as available. I’m conservative and I for one can not stand bringing in the race card. But none of this makes any sense and it feels as if this had to do with the fact that we are black. Now if they or their clients just preferred not to rent to black people then that’s fine, it’s their property. I would just prefer you to be honest and up front with me instead of leading me to believe that we can see the property. All black renters are not the same. Call me crazy but I prefer that we be judged not by my race but judge us when you actually get to meet and know us. In addition, my husband is a military veteran who served in the Iraq War and we both have master degrees (Ga Tech, The University of Georgia, The University of Sydney). By all means, judge. You have to take care of your properties. But meet the potential renters before you make your judgement to not deal with them. We spent hundreds of dollars to drive this far to see the home which I’m sure they don’t care about. So be aware who you are choosing to do business with. Unless, you actually need a company to be the face of your race discrimination. In that case, this is probably the company for you and your property. Edit 4/18 Still haven’t gotten that phone call to apologize or indicate the reason for canceling or to suggest other open properties. But by all means, apologize on a public platform because you have been called out and need to protect your reputation. You had my number. All of my texts were actually ignored including when I told you I would leave a review. Your explanation is a hard sell but I guess you have to try. Have a good one.
