Hello, I was approached by an individual who wants to rent my basement for group home settings for clients over the age of 55-year-old. I have 2 bedrooms in my basement and a full bath and there are potentials to add an additional bedroom. Is this something you can advise me about. Please help. Thank you.
Hey Caroline! Interesting request. For the most part this would be similar to a long term rental. If it is for a retirement home type with medical assistance then you will need to jump through a couple hoops usually with the state/federal level in terms of paperwork. Your place may also need to be updated to comply with ADA standards which may or may not get expensive depending on the layout of everything. Do you have more info on what the proposal is or is anything in writing?
@Caroline Ejiya What kind of group home, staffed or unstaffed. License or no license. What is the target group or occupants? There are all kinds of group homes. I have had two relatives in a group home one is blind, autistic, WC his bound his home had 24 hour staff care, a van for transport, 6 residents. One relative was in a group home and she had schizophrenia, she was fully functional in the community her group home had basically some daytime supervision and 4 residents living on their own.
Group homes run the gamut, ask lots of questions about the types of clients they serve, length of occupancy, how long the organization is in business, how many clients, what kinds of support services and staffing. Parking needs? modificiations.
