From networking to information security, careers are abound and are out there just for the taking. But where does someone begin to get the education and skills needed to lock in on this great opportunity in the field of Information Technology.

An Abundance of Options

With so many career paths, where does one begin? Depending on what peaks your interest there are many college courses that can catapult you into your desired career in information technology. Learning and working in IT can take you from the gaming world to the medical field and beyond. Some of the most popular IT careers today include software engineering, computer network architects, computer technical support specialist, and many more.

Knowing which career path you want to take, will determine what courses you should include in your educational arsenal. Individuals in the IT field have the typical educational basics for their careers. If you were to see any transcript from a person in the IT field you will probably find: information management, computer science, computer networking, and of course programming.

Finding the Right Program

Let's breakdown the educational program options available for some of the top IT careers. First, let's look at what a computer hardware engineer career requires. If you enjoy figuring out how things work and are put together, then a CHE program is for you. Computer hardware engineer's (CHE) will have courses in computer programing, fundamentals in electrical circuitry, and computer architecture. This career path will lead you to designing and testing computer components.

A career in software engineering is also a popular IT position. If you are interested in seeing how things work when it comes to software this is the path for you. A software engineering program will include courses in multiple computer programming languages such as Visual Basic, Java, and C++. You will also have courses in fundamentals in computer hardware, networking, and introduction to databases. You will find software engineers just about everywhere in the information technology field; from designing computer games and graphics, medical information systems, and space technologies.

Another hot trend in the IT field is a database administrator. If you enjoy capturing data and creating innovative ways to extract data; then this is the career path for you. Database administrators can turn a spreadsheet of data into an innovative visual program with ease. Most database administrator programs include various computer programming languages, such as Visual Basic, HTML, SQL, and many others. Database administrators make sure that software and computer hardware is maintained so that data is easily housed and secure.

As you can see some courses overlap different disciplines of study in the IT field. The best course of action is to get with a counselor and discuss your strong attributes and weaknesses to determine what career path fits you. The future is bright for anyone choosing Information Technology as their career path, due to the constant innovative changes in the world of technology.
