318 Cafe

Having an office in downtown Excelsior sure has its perks.  Aside from the gorgeous surroundings, I am always in the midst of exciting public events, great food and live performances.  Right around the corner from my office, adjacent to the Excelsior Farmers’ Market, lies the 318 café.  As owners Matty O’Reilly and Tom Peterson simplify: 318 is a “café & coffeehouse by day, live music listening room by night.”  Being an experienced veteran of the food and drink here, I can confidently say this place has some quality eats.  The menu, which has received a significant overhaul lately, offers a vast array of breakfast, lunch and dinner options.  Couple this with an even larger beverage menu and you’ve got a winner.  The food is made from scratch and always keeps a healthy outlook in mind.  While you can go off the deep end with the affordable wine and out-of-this-world red velvet cupcakes, there is enough salad and rustic pizza to keep your calories in check.  No matter which path you take; the ingredients are fresh and the taste is always top-notch.

Known equally as an established music venue, 318 comes alive with local talent after dark.  With performances almost every night, the venue hosts some of the Twin Cities finest artists – established and otherwise.  Whether it’s to make a name for oneself or just to let off some steam, 318 invites musicians from all walks of life to take the center stage during their open mic night.  Grab your instrument of choice and simply stop in to register for a 20-minute slot this Wednesday, August 4th.

Regardless if you’re grabbing a bite or settling down for a glass of red, the 318 café is just another testament to this lively community.  I am more than happy to swing by and listen to some quality music with you as we discuss why Excelsior is such a special place to live (aside from 318’s amazing tacos).
