How You Measure Success

4689If you were asked to describe success, how would you answer? Actually, let’s first step back and ask are YOU successful?

The answer depends on how you measure success; and we all see success differently.

I realized this once again as I prepare for my seminar at the Toronto Property Show on April 30 which will be about mind-set, planning and motivation for success.

As I am digging into my past I didn’t realize how much of it I ignored as success. What I am preaching is what I must live so I am proudly bringing everything to the surface to help others realize what they also may be 'pushing aside'.

Am I Successful?

Yes I am; there is no doubt in my mind. I can confidently write this because of what success means to me. If I had to break down what I think success is, it would be this:

“success is a forward action that helps me positively move away from where I am today.”

Think about that for a moment. Would you agree with that statement if you tried something and failed? Have you gambled in the stock market or in an investment that failed? Have you opened your own business only to close down after a few years? Would you still think it was all successful? The pessimist would say no, "it was unsuccessful". However, I believe such action definitely is positive because every time you do something that DOESN’T work, you are closer to something that does.

That, is the measurement of success

If you disagree with the above paragraph, maybe your view of success needs to be re-evaluated. If you only view success as materialistic like a million dollars in the bank, a huge mansion & new cars, then "small wins" and worse "failures" will keep you back.

That is why my wife and I have learned to ‘celebrate the small wins’ from my friend Don R. Campbell preaches. I certainly did not do this throughout most of my lifetime but now look back and take every excuse to acknowledge what brought me here today.

Sure, we still have big dreams and one year ‘summits’ (thank you Philip McKernan), retirement lifestyle goals, but each small steps is what makes us successful.

What If?

What if we chose NOT to take these actions, where would we be? Probably in the same position we were in 2007; just dreaming.

Is "what if" keeping YOU back from success?

Start looking at everything you do as an achievement - as hard as it is sometimes, this will set you up for true success. For example, if you lost money in your RRSP it's a lesson learned and you found this blog with someone telling you how to protect your RRSP - isn't THAT a positive action towards success?

Start the ball rolling and post your thoughts and questions below.

Let me know how you view success and we will help each other get there.

 1. @Greg and Mike - thank you both...

 2. Charles, it's true about your own personal definition of success, what is important though, is to never put someone on a pedestal and compare your forward movement towards your own personal success. For instance, I want to own 25 properties let's say. If my goal is to do this in five years and I only reach 20, am I a failure because someone else did 25? This is where too many entrepreneurs and even just regular hard working people become discouraged, because there is a certain 'success' stigma society or an industry advertises.

 3. Thanks for the comments every post read is another step for success

 4. Thanks for bringing this topic up Joey. You definitely got some quality comments.

 5. Joey, you make a good point. Small successes can be rewarding, but not lasting in the long run. The definition of success is certainly personal, but I look at it as "would I call my life a success at the end of the day?" Real success if built on many smaller successes and failures. Ultimately it is about getting to where you want to go in your life with others that are important to you.

 6. Hey Max, the one thing I caution is 'comparing' one to another; this is why society has a 'level' of success related to it even as you say, it differs from one person to the next. If we are talking specifically about Real Estate investing success, one should look at the 'why' they are investing FIRST and then decide when they are successful BASED on that 'why' - not in comparison to anyone else. This post was based on the small successes which get you further to your goals and not to base it on what society says....every step you take in a forward direction is success...that is the message.

 7. Definition of sucess is relative from one person to the next. Someone might consider himself sucessful after acquiring a home because when he compares himself to his peer group, he is the only one who actually owns a home. But another individual that owns 10 prooerties might not consider himself succesful because in his peer group everyone owns at least 50 properties. Our life is influeneced a lot from people we associate with. I am more motivated about real estate ever since i started spensing time on biggerpockets.

 8. Bryan, this is so dead on! I love that! Paralyzed is the perfect word for society with regards to stepping forward! Thanks

 9. You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take. Most people in our society are PARALYZED by fear and are subject to the biggest risk of all....not taking any!

 10. Thanks James!! I'm so glad you 'get it'. I'm glad to have you along for the ride!

 11. Thank you so much Joey for revealing this to me: “success is a forward action that helps me positively move away from where I am today.” I am looking forward reading your next posts. Thank you for sharing this! - Laws of thinking -

 12. So true Charles, one thing that comes to mind about how people perceive 'success' is "They are an overnight success". That's unrealistic due to all the building including failures to GET to that point. They are only overnight successes in people's minds because they have never heard of them before! Keep pressing forward!!

 13. Anyone afraid to make mistakes will probably have few successes. There are so many examples of people that society has called successful that made many mistakes before achieving the successes they are remembered for. It helps me to define my path. If you have goals and a plan it is far easier to see your progress. Personally I know that I'm successful because I see my plans working out.

 14. @Kevin, isn't that the truth though :) I so wish more people adopt this way of thinking! Thank you for your support in the posts!

 15. @Del, very cool statement! Thank you

 16. couldn't agree more with the statement "every time you do something that doesn't work, you are closer to something that does". That is a testament to success for me. My failures prepare me for greater success in the future, in all aspects of my life! Great post! Keep up the great work.

 17. success is a moving target, there's always something bigger to aim for!
