Fair Housing laws and equal access to housing

Contain 800x800

Did you know that as a property owner or manager, you are required to comply with Fair Housing laws? These laws are in place to ensure that everyone has equal access to housing and protection against discrimination.

✅ It's important to understand and comply with Fair Housing laws to ensure that you are treating all potential and current tenants fairly and avoiding any legal issues.

📝 Some key things to keep in mind when it comes to Fair Housing laws include:

  • Understanding the protected classes and avoiding any discrimination based on Race, Sex, Age (40 and older), Color, Sexual Orientation, Military Status, Ancestry, Marital Status, Unfavorable Discharge from Military Service, National Origin, Pregnancy, Arrest Record, Religion, Familial Status (family’s w/ children under 18 years old), Source of Income (effective 1/1/23), Disability, Order of Protection Status
  • Ensuring that your rental policies and procedures are fair and consistent for all tenants
  • Providing reasonable accommodations for tenants with disabilities
  • Avoiding any discriminatory language in your rental ads or marketing materials

💡 If you're unsure about how to comply with Fair Housing laws, there are resources available to help you. For more information visit: https://dhr.illinois.gov/filing-a-charge/housing.html
