First let me congradulate you on your choice to move to Dallas. As you already know this school and the surrounding hospitals are some of the best facilities in the nation to further your career. One of the benefits of living or working in the UT Southwestern and Parkland areas is the low cost and wide variety of housing.
On Campus Housing
UT does offer a very limited number of apartments (approximately 300 units with both 1bedroom and 2 bedroom units.) at the . We understand you might be interested in "on campus" housing. However, be forwarned it is not actually on campus, but a couple of miles away. To get to the campus, you'll need to take the shuttle service. The shuttle generally runs 6am-10pm weekdays.
Off Campus Housing Apartments
You can probably find better quality and less expensive options off campus. It also gives you the chance to get away and unwind away from work and school. The Dallas area is known to have great apartment options at a wide range of prices and with a full range of amenities. Students and staff live all over the Dallas area including cities like Irving, Addison, Coppell, Farmers Branch, and others. My best recommendation for apartments are in the Dallas Design District. This is an up and coming area between downtown and the medical center complex with several developments completed in 2009, many with loft style accommodations.
Off Campus Housing (Leases)
If you want to rent while you are in the Dallas area, one option we encourage you to consider is private leases. There are lots of condos and townhomes in the near vicinity of the school and hospitals. One of the benefits of a private rental is the chance to get away from apartment life. Apartments can bring a wide variety of people with different hours and priority than yours. We find the private rentals offer the best of both worlds....the chance to rent, but in a more professional and respectful setting. Parking on the UT Southwestern campus can be challenging, so carefully consider the location of your lease or the ease of connecting to the commuter train or the bus. There are also a few townhomes within walking distance of the school. Most of these are two bedrooms with a two car garage. Some of my favorite areas for students and residents to consider leasing are Medical District, Oak Lawn, Uptown, Knox-Henderson, Irving, and Addison. If you're bringing your family with you and/or you plan to complete not only your schooling, but also your residency or one of the longer programs at UT Southwestern, you should probably consider buying a home or townhome. Many students and residents have purchased in Dallas, Coppell, Irving, Carrollton, and several other of the surrounding cities. At the end of your time in Dallas you can either keep your home as an investment property and perhaps rent to other students or residents, or resale the home as you move on to your permanent practice city.
