Mission Beach

When the weather turns to sunshine, residents and visitors of San Diego turn to the beach.  One of the popular beaches in San Diego is Mission Beach, which spans nearly two miles of ocean between Mission Bay to the east and Pacific Beach to the north.

The Mission Beach boardwalk behind the beach has been widened with designated lanes for walking and riding and remains one of the most popular venues for the runners, joggers, bike riders, roller bladders, skateboarders and the casual walkers.  This area is extremely popular on the weekends for both locals and visitors alike and extends for miles and miles along the beach around Mission Bay.

If you’re a “serious” bike rider, then begin your ride on the boardwalk at Mission Beach and continue all the way to La Jolla.  Even though the actual boardwalk ends at the north end of Pacific Beach, you can always follow the route all the way to downtown La Jolla.  Try it, it’s a great ride!

Activities at Mission Beach include surfing, body boarding, swimming, kayaking and of course sunbathing and picnicking.  The good part about Mission Beach is the swimmers and surfers use separate swimming areas, which are designated by City lifeguards.

As with most beach towns, you’ll able to rent bikes, surfboards or alike for any water sport activity.  If you’re looking for an exciting ride outside of the water, try the Big Dipper roller coaster ride at Belmont Amusement Park, located at the north end of Mission Beach.  Built in 1925, with several renovations throughout the years, this 73-foot tall wooden coaster ride is very exhilarating.

If you’re thinking of taking your kids to Mission Beach, think no more.  They will love this area.  Beside the roller coaster and all the other rides, they will love the beach with its surf and sand which always provides hours of enjoyment with a variety of land and water activities.
