At the heart of Montgomery County lies the beautiful varied city of Gaithersburg. Separated by I-270 into east and west sections, Gaithersburg is unique in having both an older historic district that is similar to most large suburbs in the United States and also a much more modern kind of city planning that really makes Gaithersburg stand out.
The city is loosely separated into east and west sections by I-270. The east side is the orginal portion of town, and includes Olde Town, which has fantastic amenities, unique locally-owned shops, and a wide variety of restaurants. The east side also includes Lakeforest Mall, City Hall, and the Montgomery Fairgrounds. Meanwhile, the west portion of town is much more future-oriented, with award-winning neighborhoods like the Kentlands and the Lakelands, and impressive shopping districts like the well known Rio Washingtonian Center.
As a virtual suburb of Washington, DC, Gaithersburg is the northern terminus of the red line, with the Shady Grove metro station just outside the city limits. The planned Corridor Cities Transitway will extend light rail throughout the western portion of the city. Gaithersburg also operates the MARC commuter rail which travels directly to Washington with no stops.
