Find The Apartment That's Perfect For You

There are a lot of components that make up the perfect apartment and they are different for each individual. As you begin you search for your new place it is helpful to prioritize what key features and amenities are most important to you in your new apartment. This will allow you to quickly dismiss properties that don't meet your needs and spend your time viewing properties that meet your search criteria. This will also greatly help if you are working with an agent by allowing them to find the perfect place for you without showing you other properties.

Even if you aren't completely positive on exactly what you want the general options listed below will get you thinking in the right direction and allow you to effectively narrow your search toward finding your perfect place.

Apartment Size

The square footage of an apartment and number of bedrooms and bathrooms is usually linked directly to how much rent you will be paying and will also affect your heating and cooling costs. Take into account how much space you actually need and then decide how many bedrooms and bathrooms you will need in your new place. Remember extra space adds not only to a higher rent payment but also to increased other costs like furniture and utilities.

Location

Think about your regular weekly activities such as work and social outings when you are deciding where you would like to live. It may be more beneficial to rent an apartment that is closer to work to save money and commuting time as opposed to living in the trendiest neighborhood you can afford. The cost savings can add up quick and allow you to spend extra money and time doing the things you enjoy.

Apartment Type

Apartments come in all shapes and sizes from high-rise penthouses to single family homes and each is suited to a different kind of individual. High-rises are generally more expensive to live in but also offer amenities like gyms and valet parking that could save you money. If you have a dog or children you may prefer a townhouse or single family home with a yard that will save you trips up and down the elevator to take out your pet.

Parking

If you are living in the city it is likely that parking may be an issue you should take into account if you have a car. Parking can be very expensive if it is not included in your building and can also cause a lot of headaches if you are parking on the street in your area or a garage nearby. In some areas with higher crime rates a gated garage may prove invaluable and save you from finding a window broken and your belongings stolen.

Laundry

Although apartments increasingly have laundry machines in each unit, not all building, especially older units are so convenient.  Some apartment buildings have a common laundry room while others require you to do your laundering at the local laundromat. Having laundry machines in your unit will add to your rent and utility bill but the added convenience may outweigh the costs.

There are many other things that make an apartment the perfect place for you such as flooring, balconies and kitchen appliances and you should add all of those which are important to you to your list during your apartment search. Also, keep in mind that real estate agents can be invaluable in helping you find the perfect place.
