How NOT to Find Vacant Houses

So, I’ve been noticing a house in my neighborhood that looks vacant. There were still garbage cans out front, but other than that-it had all the signs. Curtains pulled, overgrown yard, peeling paint.

Our family was going for a walk with some friends and I commented on it. The adults were talking about whether it was abandoned or not. The kids overheard and had the idea to go knock on the door. My friend encouraged them with a dare and that sealed it.

I felt pretty bad when a guy came out the front door! Fortunately for us, he was very friendly. I apologized and explained that we were wondering if anyone lived there.

I think I’ll stick to direct mail to find vacants from now on . . .

Anyone else have any stories? Please share!

  1. Funny, had one I was eyeballing and was mentoring a friend, so gave them the lead and told her to run it to ground. She tracked owner down and had permission to view. But he did not have a key. Anyway, she gave a bid on it as is without breaking in and never was able to reach him again. Almost think the offer gave him heart attack as the house is still abandoned so I decided to try too with no luck. Well recently county post a clean up or else and nothing. Since it is across street from a rental of mine and taxes unpaid, wish I had paid taxes at sale. Oh well, only time will tell, but do think he passed and family may not be aware of it since he is supposedly from texas and has a jackson ms drop box for this parcel in hattiesburg!
