Oklahoma Home Heating: Eco-Friendly Fireplace

Colder weather is quickly approaching and choosing the most budget friendly yet efficient method of heating a home is an important decision. Fireplaces are quite common devices that are used to not only heat a space but create an inviting and cozy atmosphere. An eco-friendly fireplace is becoming an in demand alternative to the traditional unit that can possibly have negative or potentially hazard side effects.

Conventional fireplaces utilize a chimney to release smoke and fumes into the atmosphere. These combinations create carbon monoxide which is not only hazardous to humans but also damaging to the environment. The actual heat produced by the fireplace in order to warm the home is mostly lost up the chimney. This causes the homeowner to spend more money trying to maintain a comfortable temperature within the space. The central air unit may also run longer periods of time in order to regulate temperatures thus adding to expenses as well.

An option for a more eco-friendly fireplace would be a natural gas unit. These pieces are incredibly natural looking and extremely clean. No actual logs or wood must be burnt which eliminates ash, soot and other debris from being distributed. Fake logs can be purchased to present the same look that a regular fireplace would possess. Existing units can be converted to natural gas fixtures or a full insert can be purchased.

Another green fireplace option is one that utilizes bio-fuel. Bio-fuel is normally associated with automobiles; however, this form of fuel is quite successful in creating an aesthetic look to a faux fireplace. Derived from organic materials such as bananas and corn, this fuel is extremely clean and unscented. While it does not provide the type of summer-like Oklahoma City heating, it does create a wonderful appearance.

Pellet burning fireplaces require actual pellets that are made from plant by-products. These pellets can be used in a simple fireplace insert or in specifically designed stoves. They do not create the same look as a wood burning stove but they do produce a great amount of heat. In fact, you can actually adjust the amount of heat or temperature in the fireplace with these pellets. The burning of these pellets does not create any smoke or hazardous fumes as well as eliminating any debris.

Certain wood burning stoves are considered green and can be quite efficient. Consumers should look for units that have an EPA approval. This ensures that the Environmental Protection Agency has given the product a thumbs up in the eco-friendly department. Options include devices that utilize soapstone and heat-radiating iron. These components drastically improve efficiency. Another green fireplace is known as a masonry heater and can heat substantial areas of a home at once. These are built with a specific design that slowly releases heat over a period of 12 to 24 hours. The consistent release allows the space to maintain the perfect temperature.

Every home is unique and will require a specific type of eco-friendly fireplace to ensure the best fit. Many old frames can also be transformed into a green fireplace if so desired. A consumer should consider the size of the space and the desired results when shopping for a unit.
