Getting organized: disability insurance

Today I am researching disability insurance.  It's something we should have, but it's expensive and feels somewhat annoying.  Could we get by without it?  Maybe, but -- if we end up taking on debt for property, it makes sense to be cautious.

Of course, we only need disability insurance until the cash flow from properties could replace our income.  There is a light to strive toward!

What terms to select?  I'm looking for minimal coverage, perhaps a 5 year term, a 180 day waiting period, and a payout that will simply keep our mortgage paid, food on the table and the lights on.

I am cheap but I don't want to be stupid.  It's time to get this taken care of!
