Pay a little money now, save thousands later
Would you vote for a political candidate without knowing their party affiliation? Would you buy a pair of jeans without first trying them on? Would you purchase an expensive car without taking it for a test drive? If you are a landlord, would you rent your property to someone without paying for a background screening?
While sometimes you can get lucky relying on a gut feeling – i.e. sometimes the jeans will fit or the tenant might not be a bad renter -- in the end, it’s always best to be thorough to save yourself from extra hassle and costs later.
Also, it’s important to remember that if a pair of jeans doesn’t fit, you can simply return them to the store for a full refund. But if a tenant turns out to be a criminal, non-paying or causes lots of damage to your property, there is no guarantee you will ever recoup the costs.
You can find out if your renter has, at the very least, good credit and a history of eviction. Failure to make this small investment could result in a loss of thousands of dollars .
